'Liturgy Days,' lector enrichment planned by Office for Worship

text only version

The archdiocesan Office for Worship will host two events this fall designed to educate and enrich liturgical ministers.

On Sept. 16, an Enrichment Day for Lectors in both English and Spanish will be presented, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Center at Cathedral Plaza, Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

The presenters are Father J. Patrick Mullen (in English) and Piarist Father Manuel Sanahuja (in Spanish). Father Mullen is professor of Biblical Studies at St. John's Seminary, Camarillo, and Father Sanahuja is Hispanic ministry coordinator in the Office for Worship.

"This event provides Scriptural-based spirituality and formation for those who proclaim the Word," said Sandra Dooley, director of the Office for Worship. "Archdiocesan guidelines for lectors will be reviewed and the General Instruction of the Roman Missal will be presented as it relates to this ministry. This is an enrichment event and is not intended to be an introduction to the ministry of lector."

Those interested in attending this event at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels should contact Timothy Caruthers, program administrator in the Office for Worship at (213) 637-7586, or email TMCaruthers@la-archdiocese.org.

On Oct. 27-28, the office will present its annual "Liturgy Days" event at the Los Angeles Convention Center, this year focusing on "Doing the Rites Right: It Takes a Parish." Aimed at parish initiation teams (including priests, deacons, liturgists, dismissal leaders, music ministers, DREs and faith formation directors, and hospitality-planning committee members), the conference is designed to provide information and answer questions on the Rites of Initiation.

Jerry Galipeau, editor at World Library Publications and past chair of the board of the North American Forum on the Catechumenate, will be the presenter in English, while Father Tim Piasecki of St. Mary Church in Aurora, Ill., and a North American Forum board member, will lead the sessions in Spanish.

The same presentation will be made both days, to accommodate those who prefer a Friday or Saturday. The program begins at 9 a.m. and concludes at 4 p.m. Registration is $50 per person or $40 per person for parish teams of four or more.

The Office for Worship maintains a list of presenters who offer their knowledge and expertise in this ministry, some in English and Spanish. Call the Office for Worship, (213) 637-7262, for names and contact information.
