OBITUARIES

Sr. Mary Georgina Gleason, CSJ

Funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 14 at Carondelet Center, Brentwood, for St. Joseph of Carondelet Sister Mary Georgina (Dolores Louise) Gleason, 82, who died Aug. 8.

Born in Butte, Mont., she attended Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1945. She received the habit and the name Sister Mary Georgina on March 19, 1946.

From 1948 to 1998, Sister Gleason taught first grade at Catholic elementary schools in California, Arizona and Washington. In the Los Angeles Archdiocese she taught at St. John the Evangelist, Our Lady of the Valley, Holy Cross, St. John Chrysostom, St. Ferdinand, St. Joseph the Worker, American Martyrs, and St. James Schools. It has been estimated that she has taught 4500 children how to read.

An avid sewer, Sister Gleason and her sewing machine "were seldom parted, and for decades one rarely saw her without pinking shears or needle and thread in her hand," said a statement from the CSJ community. "Her creative stitching and quilting were the talk of every boutique, and she created banners and hangings with exquisite care."

Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery, Culver City.

Sister Camillus O'Connor, BVM

Funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 17 in Dubuque, Iowa, for Sister of Charity Camillus O'Connor, 95, who died Aug. 15.

A San Francisco native, she graduated from St. Brigid Elementary and High Schools before entering the BVM congregation in 1931. She professed first vows in 1934 and final vows in 1939.

Sister O'Connor taught for 22 years at St. Brendan, Los Angeles; Incarnation, Glendale; and St. Philip, Pasadena. She also taught in Chicago, Butte and San Francisco.

She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Lynch, of San Francisco, nieces and a nephew. Memorials may be given to the Sisters of Charity, BVM Retirement Fund.

Sister Catherine Hayes, SP

Funeral Mass was celebrated July 25 in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind., for Sister of Providence Catherine Ursula Hayes, 89, who died July 18.

Born in Chicago, Sister Hayes entered the Sisters of Providence in 1936 and taught in schools around the U.S. and in Taiwan. Locally, she taught at Marywood School, Anaheim (1954-59).

Ana Maria Velasco

Funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 17 at St. Ignatius of Loyola Church, Highland Park, for Ana Maria Velasco, 74, who died Aug. 12. She was the mother of Father Arturo Velasco, pastor, and of Maria Velasco and Delia Rehome. Burial was at Resurrection Cemetery, Montebello.

Louise Supancheck

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Aug. 25 at St. Barnabas Church, Long Beach, for Louise "Alice" Supancheck, who died Aug. 17, two weeks short of her 93rd birthday. She was the mother of Father Norman Supancheck, in residence at St. Didacus Church in Sylmar, and of Dominican Sister Phyllis Supancheck. Burial was at All Souls Cemetery, Long Beach.
