Sr. Mary Georgina Gleason, CSJ
Funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 14 at Carondelet Center, Brentwood, for St. Joseph of Carondelet Sister Mary Georgina (Dolores Louise) Gleason, 82, who died Aug. 8.

Born in Butte, Mont., she attended Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1945. She received the habit and the name Sister Mary Georgina on March 19, 1946.

From 1948 to 1998, Sister Gleason taught first grade at Catholic elementary schools in California, Arizona and Washington. In the Los Angeles Archdiocese she taught at St. John the Evangelist, Our Lady of the Valley, Holy Cross, St. John Chrysostom, St. Ferdinand, St. Joseph the Worker, American Martyrs, and St. James Schools. It has been estimated that she has taught 4500 children how to read.

An avid sewer, Sister Gleason and her sewing machine "were seldom parted, and for decades one rarely saw her without pinking shears or needle and thread in her hand," said a statement from the CSJ community. "Her creative stitching and quilting were the talk of every boutique, and she created banners and hangings with exquisite care."

Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery, Culver City.
