Cantor A certification to be offered starting Aug. 7

The Office for Worship will be offering a Cantor Certification, Part A session beginning Aug. 7 at St. Didacus Church in Sylmar.

Cantor A is eight weeks long (Mondays to Oct. 2 except for Labor Day, Sept. 4) and sets up a foundational understanding of the formation, ministry and spirituality of the Cantor. Prerequisites for this course of study include:

---Basic ability to read music notation, both in terms of pitch and rhythm, and to learn music.
---Ability to match pitch and maintain a melody.
---Capability of singing in a clear and pleasant manner.
---Basic knowledge of liturgy and the order of liturgy.
---Basic spirit of hospitality and service.

The course will be led by Janis Nelson, director of liturgy at St. Rose of Lima Church, Simi Valley, and will include study of the liturgy documents of the church as well as instruction and formation in the ministry of cantor.

There are a few spaces available in this training, with registration required by July 28. Cost is $100 per person. For additional information and to register, contact Timothy M.
