July 6: Eight Lay Mission-Helpers make solemn promises before heading to Africa to work. They range in age from 24 to 30 and include a couple, five single women and twin sisters. They all studied for 16 months, 10 hours a week with Msgr. Anthony Brouwers, the director, to prepare for their missionary work.

July 13: Sixteen bridal photos are featured listing names of bride and groom, their schools, parents and church wedding site. All pictures show the women in their bridal finery.

July 20: Hopeful word from China indicates that Jesuit Father John Houle, of Glendale, will soon be released after serving four years in a communist prison.

The County Board of Supervisors honors Joseph Scott, "Mr. Los Angeles," on his 89th birthday. The noted lawyer and Catholic leader arrived in L.A. in 1893.
