David Moore named
Tidings executive publisher

text only version

Cardinal Roger Mahony has named David Moore as executive publisher of The Tidings Corporation effective July 1, 2006. Moore, who has been serving as director of the archdiocesan Office of Telecommunications since 1998, worked with Catholic Television Network to repurpose the use of Catholic television spectrum licenses. He developed a team to rewrite and lobby for rule changes at the Federal Communications Commission to allow for new and enhanced educational uses.

Moore has been working with the archdiocese since November, 1965, first as the developer of instructional television programming in over 100 parish schools. In 1987 he was appointed by the cardinal to be executive director of the archdiocesan Office of Communications. He developed and implemented, in concert with the Communications Board, a five year strategic planning process to reorganize and revitalize The Tidings and to identify the future communications needs of the Archdiocese. A plan was ultimately approved that included launching the Spanish-language newspaper Vida Nueva to serve Southern California's growing Catholic Hispanic community.

As the need arose, Moore has served as general manager of The Tidings and Vida Nueva several times, the longest period from, May 1992 to January, 1997. He was an ex-officio Tidings Board member from August, 1987 to July, 1998.

Moore is married to Marsha Moore and has four adult children and eight grandchildren. He is a native of South Dakota and a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill with a dual major in electrical engineering and radio, television and film.

Capuchin Franciscan Father Anthony Scannell is retiring as executive publisher following two and a half years. He will continue to serve in parish ministry. Father Scannell lauded Moore's 20 years experience with The Tidings, particularly when the paper was going through significant format changes. "I think he's the best possible choice we could have had," said Father Scannell. "He knows the whole development of the newspaper, and he's been present to our staff all these years."

Moore said he was looking forward to serving as executive publisher. "Since I was involved in revitalizing The Tidings and creating Vida Nueva, I'm excited about returning home to the papers and continuing to expand their value to parishioners and the archdiocese," said Moore.
