Ashe Sports Scholar

text only version

Jevay Grooms, a member of the Loyola Marymount Unviersity women's basketball team, was named a 2006 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar in Diverse: Issues in Higher Education Magazine. The Sports Scholars Awards, established in 1992, honor undergraduate students of color who exemplify the standards set by tennis great Arthur Ashe Jr.

To be included on the Sports Scholar Team, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2; and have demonstrated a record of service to the campus or community. Grooms graduated from LMU May 6 with a 3.36 GPA and a double major in Political Science and Economics.

In the final weeks of the school year, Grooms earned numerous other honors:

---the Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Economics Award;

---the Lisa Leslie Award given to the African American female graduating student-athlete with the highest GPA;

---the Sr. Raymunde McKay, RSHM, Award for her outstanding service and leadership to the LMU community;

---the LMU Athletic Department Pride Award;

---and one of 26 LMU Presidential Citations, awarded to graduating seniors for outstanding academic record, leadership and service and embodying the University's goal to create "men and women for others."

In Grooms' basketball career, she recorded the highest career field goal percentage in school history (52.2 percent, and 53.9 percent in her last two seasons). She was a 2005 WCC All-Academic selection, and was named to the Nugget Classic All-Tournament team in 2004.
