Cathedral hosts 'Flores de Mayo at Santacruzan'

text only version

The second annual celebration in honor of Mary, "Alay Kay Maria --- Flores de Mayo at Santacruzan," will take place at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on May 27 at 10 a.m.

Sponsored by the archdiocesan Filipino Ministry, the event is open to the public and will include a Mass with Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop Oscar Solis, vicar for ethnic (multi-cultural) ministries in the archdiocese.

Reminiscent of Marian processions in the Philippines where young ladies dress up as historic and religious personalities, the celebration will include a children's flower offering to Our Lady and a traditional "sagala" parade in the Cathedral courtyard following the liturgy. Last year's first-ever archdiocesan celebration of Santacruzan at St. Genevieve parish in Panorama City drew more than 25 sagalas and over 800 participants.

This year, organizers hope to draw over 1,500 people to the Santacruzan event at the Cathedral. Children, ages 3-10 years, and sagalas, aged 10 and up, wishing to participate at this year's ceremony may call Good Shepherd Sister Mary Christina Sevilla, (323) 662-8480, or Butch Geraldez, (323) 662-7154.
