The Irish keep coming

text only version

It is easy to go a bit daft when trying to keep organized the names of the Irish-born pastors who have served in Los Angeles over the past century-plus --- a tribute saga that began with our St. Patrick's Day issue, continued March 31, and now, it seems, has signed on for an extended tour.

Thus, this week's installment may not be our last words on the subject --- but not because we haven't tried to get it right. Besides being given some new names to add, we realized that there are some duplicate names that need clarification. So in the dogged interests of accuracy, we offer the following who have yet to be properly recognized.

First, some clarifications:
---Two Monsignors Patrick O'Dwyer of County Tipperary have served the archdiocese. Patrick F. O'Dwyer (ordained 1924) served as pastor of St. Bernard in Bellflower, St. Sebastian and Holy Name of Jesus, Los Angeles, and for 24 years (1947-71) at St. Elizabeth, Van Nuys, before his death in 1971. Patrick O'Dwyer (ordained 1972) served 12 years as pastor of St. Bruno, Whittier, before becoming pastor at St. Maximilian Kolbe, Westlake Village, in 2005.
---Two Fathers James F. O'Grady from County Mayo have served here as pastors. One was ordained in 1954 after completing seminary studies in Baltimore and New York. He was named pastor of St. Gregory Nazianzen, Koreatown, in 1973, then served as pastor of St. Anthony, El Segundo, for 18 years (1983-2001); he lives now in Ireland. The other was ordained in 1958 from All Hallows Seminary, and was pastor at Visitation, Westchester, succeeding founding pastor Msgr. Thomas J. O'Sullivan in 1980. He remains there as pastor emeritus.

Some additions:
---Fr. David Barry (County Cork), pastor of Divine Saviour, Los Angeles for 12 years when he died in 1963.
---Msgr. John Beattie (County Armagh, Northern Ireland), pastor at St. Ambrose, West Hollywood, for 10 years until his death in 1997.
---Fr. Michael Haran (County Sligo), pastor at St. Paul, St. John the Evangelist and St. Jerome, all in Los Angeles, before his death at age 53 in 1973.
---Fr. Thomas Meskill (County Limerick), pastor at St. Raphael, Goleta; now retired and living at St. John of God Retirement and Care Center in Los Angeles.
---Fr. Thomas Noonan (County Limerick), pastor at Divine Saviour, died in 1954 at age 54.
---Also, one of the most famous pastors responsible for the "golden age" of priestly vocations: Msgr. Francis Fogarty (County Tipperary), pastor of St. Brendan, L.A., for 26 years; he died in 1966 at age 63.
---And, Msgr. Patrick V. Harnett, P.A. (County Limerick), former rector of St. Vibiana's Cathedral, founding pastor of Sacred Heart in Lincoln Heights, and both archdiocesan vicar-general (at different times) under Bishops George Montgomery, Thomas Conaty and John Cantwell. The state's first monsignor, he died in 1924.

Additionally, Msgr. Steven Downes of St. Mary in Palmdale is from Dublin, not Meath.

As mentioned previously, our lists have been confined to those Irish-born diocesan priests who have served as pastors. Compiling a list of religious order pastors from Ireland who have served here is a project that, at this time, must wait for another day.
