Obituaries: Sr. Bernice Sherlock, OP

Funeral Mass was held Feb. 15 at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse Chapel in Fremont for Dominican Sister Bernice Sherlock, 96, who died Feb. 12.

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, Sister Sherlock was a Dominican Sister for 78 years. Locally, she taught at Sacred Heart, St. Michael, St. Ignatius and Santa Teresita elementary schools as well as Sacred Heart and St. Michael high schools in Los Angeles. She also taught at St. Catherine Military School in Anaheim, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in La Caņada/Flintridge and Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Santa Barbara.

In addition, Sister Sherlock was supervisor of the art program for Dominican Sisters' schools for several years. Survivors include a brother, Donald Sherlock, and a sister, Rita Harth. Memorial donations may be made to the Dominican Sisters Retirement Fund or the Mother Pia Backes Education Fund, 43326 Mission Blvd., CA 94539, or the Vision of Hope Fund, 1555 34th Ave., Oakland, CA 94601.

Fr. Walter Mattiato, MCCJ
Funeral Mass was held Feb. 13 at Sacred Heart Church in Covina for Comboni Missionary Father Walter Mattiato, who died Feb. 8 of heart failure in his sleep at Kindred Hospital in West Covina.

Ordained at the Cathedral of Milan, Italy, in 1949, Father Mattiato came to America the same year. He ministered in parishes in Rome, Michigan and Washington, Georgia before arriving in California in 1973 to serve as an associate pastor at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Irwindale.

In the '80s, he ministered at the Indian Mission of Santa Isabel in San Diego County and also the Pala Indian Mission. A dialysis patient for the last nine years, Father Mattiato assisted at Sacred Heart Church in Covina as health permitted. Burial was at Pala Mission.

Sr. Ellen Elizabeth Kelly, SP
Funeral Mass was held Feb. 11 at St. Joseph Residence in Seattle, Washington for Providence Sister Ellen Elizabeth Kelly, 93, who died Feb. 5.

Born in Seattle, she obtained her teaching diploma before entering the Sisters of Providence in Seattle in 1935. Her teaching ministry included positions as a teacher and principal in Providence elementary and secondary schools in the northwest and Burbank. Locally, she spent several years working in school development for Providence High School in Burbank.

Community members remembered Sister Kelly for building and fostering "a multitude of relationships which continued to enrich her throughout her life." Memorial donations may be sent to: Sisters of Providence, Office of Development, 9 East 9th Ave., Spokane, WA 99202-1209.

Olga Tortell
Funeral Mass will be celebrated April 1, noon, at St. Joseph Church, Pomona, for Olga Catherine, 80, who died peacefully March 24 at Pomona Valley Medical Center after having courageously battled pancreatic cancer for the past eight months.

Mrs. Tortell was born on July 25, 1925 in Youngstown, Ohio, to John and Zora Kovach. She graduated from Warren Harding High School in Warren, Ohio, and came to Los Angeles in 1946. She had been a resident of Pomona for the past 54 years.

She was a member of the Pomona Friends of the Library, Historical Society of Pomona, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Altar Society of St. Joseph's Church, and the Young Ladies Institute. She served as a Eucharistic minister, lector, cantor, bible study teacher, prayer group leader and religious education teacher for many years at both St. Madeleine Church and her current parish, St. Joseph's Church.

Mrs. Tortell is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 56 years, Bob, daughter Cathryn of Westlake Village; an uncle, Zvonko Vajon of Zagreb, Croatia; cousins Stephanie Murphy of Oceanside, Katherine Oreskovich of Ohio, Rosemarie Schmidt and Sylvia Schurman of New Jersey; brothers-in-law William, Fred and John Tortell; sisters-in-law Lindy, Lilliana and Maureen Tortell; 17 nephews and nieces and 23 great-nephews and nieces. She will also be sorely missed by her many lifelong friends from the community, the Cursillo Movement as well as members of the De La Salle Club where she and Bob first met in Glendale.

A vigil service will be held on Friday, March 31 at 6:30 p.m. at Todd Memorial Chapel in Pomona. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Pomona.
