Sister Lemon, survivor of Pearl Harbor, dies at 104
St. Joseph of Carondelet Sister Adele Marie Lemon, who hid
in sugar cane fields with fellow religious sisters during
the 1941 Sunday morning bombing of Pearl Harbor, died Feb.
23 at age 104. She would have celebrated her 85th anniversary
as a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet on March 19.
Born
in Wilcox, Arizona, she entered religious life one month short
of her 20th birthday. During her first 15 years of ministry,
Sister Lemon taught school in San Francisco and Fresno.
On Aug. 24, 1938, along with eight other pioneer sisters opening the first overseas CSJ mission, she was welcomed to Hawaii by crowds carrying fragrant leis and singing an "Aloha" greeting. She taught 8th and 9th graders at St. Theresa School in Honolulu for 11 years before the Pearl Harbor attack, which she described in her book, "To You From Hawaii."
One of Sister Lemon's students (who later became Sister Ann Faber), remembered how her teacher would play lively music on the piano and harmonica to distract the children during WWII. Before returning to the mainland in 1949, Sister Lemon wrote two additional books about Hawaii: a children's book, "The Magic Wishbone," and a small catechism "Quiz Book" which was translated into Melanesian and Tagalog.
Stateside, Sister Lemon taught high school for the next 32 years in Inglewood, Oxnard, San Diego, San Francisco and Tucson. In 1957, she was given a Del Amo grant to study at the University of Valencia in Spain and another in 1960 to teach English at the University in Santander, Spain. At age 81, her last year of teaching, Sister Lemon was invited, along with five other Sisters, to take a trip to China.
She ministered as a patient visitor at Daniel Freeman Hospital for a number of years before retiring to Carondelet Center in 1991. "Sister Adele Marie had the ability to accept life with great dignity and joy. Her manner of being and great sense of humor never diminished in spite of her age," recounted a fellow community member. Sister Lemon's funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 28 at Carondelet Center in Los Angeles.
