"May St. Patrick guard you wherever you go and guide you
in whatever you do.
May his loving protection be a blessing to you always."
The
epic quest for gold that erupted in California in 1848 created
the "great spectacle of the age," according to one historian.
Subsequently, the "49ers" flooded northern California coming
from across America and including ambitious seekers from Europe,
Asia and South America --- the first great wave of immigrants
to populate the Golden State.
Another quest was soon to follow that would foster a religious impact California sorely needed. That contribution would come from Ireland and the great influx of priests who --- for more than a century --- were sent to the far west.
The influx took root in 1842 --- four years before the devastating Irish famine --- when Father John Hand founded All Hallows Seminary to train emigrant missionaries. Other institutes were established in Carlow, Thurles, Wexford and Waterford as young men pursued their missionary call to service.
In 1850 --- the year California was admitted as the nation's 31st state --- the newly appointed Bishop of Monterey, Joseph Sadoc Alemany, paused briefly in Ireland on his return from Rome, mainly to recruit priests for the vast Diocese of Both Californias. At All Hallows Seminary, the bishop met a young professor of theology, Father Eugene O'Connell, and invited him to visit the far west. The consequences of that encounter would "initiate a ceaseless flow of Irish priests to evangelize the Last Frontier," as noted in a column years later by Archbishop Robert Dwyer in The Tidings.
In 1851 Father O'Connell embarked on a three-year endeavor to form a seminary, first at Mission Santa Ines and then at Mission Dolores. After a six-year return to Ireland, the theologian was again sent to the pioneer country and for 23 years struggled to provide spiritual guidance and leadership. Eventually, from All Hallows Seminary came a generous supply of young priests to man the missions: "They came in their scores, raw, uninstructed in the mysteries of survival in primitive America," wrote Archbishop Dwyer.
From that beginning, the Irish missionaries' faith journey contributed in great measure to the foundation of the church in California. This history of their pilgrimage during 150 years is but a brief outline of pastorates and years of service.
Four of them rose to the episcopacy:
---
Bishop Thomas J. Conaty of Kilnaleck;
---Archbishop John J. Cantwell, County
Limerick;
---Cardinal Timothy Manning, Balingeary;
---and
Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Curry, Drumgoon.
Among the many pastors who founded parishes or labored many
years at one church are:
---Msgr. Michael Galvin (County Limerick), the eldest of
five brothers who all became priests: 49 years at Holy Family,
Glendale.
---Msgr. John Devlin (County Cork), Hollywood's "Padre of
the Films": 45 years at St. Victor, West Hollywood.
---Father Patrick Grogan (County Roscommon), restored the
Ventura Mission, "last living link with the Spanish padres":
42 years at Mission San Buenaventura.
---Msgr. Thomas Blackwell (County Limerick), "a pioneer in
a time when there were few to speak to men the ways of God":
41 years at St. Paul, L.A.
---Msgr. Michael Carvill (County Down), who built Incarnation's
church, rectory, school, convent: 41 years at Incarnation,
Glendale.
---Msgr. John Gallagher (County Sligo), who started as chaplain
at Fort Yuma Indian school: 41 years at St. Thomas the Apostle,
L.A.
---Msgr. Peter Hanrahan (County Tipperary), the first archdiocesan
archivist: 38 years at All Souls, Alhambra.
