Theological Symposium: March 14

The Second Annual Charles E. Miller, C.M. Theological Symposium at St. John's Seminary in Camarillo will feature Santa Barbara Region Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Curry presenting "The Catholic Church in the New Millennium: The Best of Times and the Worst of Times." A scholar of American Catholicism, Bishop Curry is author of "The First Freedoms: Church and State in America to the Passage of the First Amendment" and has written extensively in the area of church and state relations as well as the role of the Catholic Church in American society and culture. His upcoming presentation will be a historical, theological and personal reflection on the implications of the present crisis for American Catholics and the church in the United States. Teacher Recruitment Day: March 18

The archdiocesan Department of Catholic Schools will hold a Teacher Recruitment Day Presentation March 18 at Mount St. Mary's College, Doheny Campus, 10 Chester Pl., near downtown Los Angeles. The elementary school presentation will take place at 9:30 a.m. and the secondary school presentation will be at 11:30 a.m. The meeting is designed for those interested in teaching at a Catholic school, grades K-12, within the counties of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara. The presentation will offer a glimpse into the characteristics of the Catholic school and its teachers as well as the application process and benefits. Oxfam America Training for Trainers: March 18

Oxfam America will host an interfaith training so that faith communities can help promote agricultural policies that ensure the well-being of poor farmers in the U.S. as well as impoverished communities around the world. People of faith have an opportunity to shape U.S. agricultural policy as Congress begins to host public committee hearings on the farm bill. The "Train the Trainers" workshop will take place March 18, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in St. Joseph's Center at Holy Family Church, 1524 Fremont Ave., South Pasadena. The day will provide concrete tools to parish and social justice leaders who want to educate and engage their members on issues of hunger, farming policy and trade. Training staff include Father Andrew Small from the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops, Xavier Benavides from Oxfam and Victoria Mesa, Oxfam's California field organizer.
