Services held for Fr. Harold 'Bud' Powers, CSP

St. Paul the Apostle Church senior priest in residence, Paulist Father Harold "Bud" Powers, founder of the UC Irvine Newman Club, died Jan. 4.

A native of New York City, Father Powers was ordained for the Paulists in 1948. He served in parishes in New York, Rome, West Virginia (Morgantown), and Texas (Lubbock, Richardson) and also ministered as a federal prison chaplain in Oklahoma and Colorado.

In the late 1960s, he was on staff at UCLA's Newman Club and, in 1969, was named the first full-time director at the new UC Irvine Newman Chaplaincy. Since 1982, he has resided at St. Paul the Apostle in Westwood where he enjoyed being the chaplain to the kindergarten and first grade classes at the school.

"He was a very dedicated priest and he touched a lot of people's lives in very positive ways," said St. Paul the Apostle pastor, Paulist Father Thomas Jones. An evening funeral Mass for Father Powers was held Jan. 10 at the parish. Interment took place Jan. 11 at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City.

Sr. M. Veronice Fisher, CSC

Longtime religious educator, Holy Cross Sister M. Veronice Fisher, died suddenly in her home Dec. 15. A dedicated volunteer at Our Mother of Good Counsel Church, she taught in the parish religious education program and helped drive parishioners to Mass and doctor appointments as needed.

Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, she entered the postulate of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in Notre Dame after high school. Sister Fisher taught on all levels of education, including primary, junior high, high school and college for 40 years. She also served as a campus minister at Saint Mary's College in Indiana and as the director of religious education at the Valley Korean Catholic Center in Canoga Park.

Survivors include brothers, Jesuit Father David (Ted) Fisher, John Fisher Sr. (Barbara) and four nieces and nephews and 11 grandnieces and nephews. Father Fisher, SJ presided at her funeral on Dec. 20 held at Our Mother of Good Counsel Church.

Sr. Kathleen Murray, SNDdeN

Funeral Mass was held Jan. 7 at Cunningham Memorial Chapel at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont for Sister of Notre Dame de Namur Kathleen Murray, 85, who died Dec. 18 in Oakland at the Mercy Retirement and Care Center.

A member of her religious community for 67 years, Sister Murray taught and administered in elementary and high schools run by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur throughout California. She also served as an administrator at College of Notre Dame, now Notre Dame de Namur University, in Belmont.

At age 69, after careers as a teacher, administrator and parish minister, she came to St. Columbkille Elementary School in Los Angeles where she served as a teachers' aide from 1989-96. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, 1520 Ralston Avenue, Belmont, California, 94002.

Gail Fabbro

Funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 7 at St. Philip the Apostle Church, Pasadena, for Gail Fabbro, 68, an original member of The Tidings advisory board, who died Dec. 9 of lung cancer.

Born in Highland Park, Fabbro attended St. Ignatius Elementary School, St. Andrew High School in Pasadena, and was married to Robert Fabbro in 1961 at Holy Family Church, South Pasadena. She later earned a graduate certificate in Liturgical Studies at Mt. St. Mary's College in Los Angeles.

A longtime parishioner of Holy Family, Fabbro served as the school religion coordinator where she created, directed and composed music for original plays at the parish's annual summer vacation Bible camp. She also served as Holy Family liturgy director, and more recently served on the parish liturgy committee at St. Philip the Apostle.

Kathy Lindell, a longtime friend and colleague in liturgy, said Fabbro's "love for and creative approaches to liturgical renewal were recognized beyond the Los Angeles Archdiocese." Fabbro served on the editorial board of Modern Liturgy magazine (now known as Ministry and Liturgy) and wrote a regular column for Modern Liturgy on preparing liturgy in the parish. She also authored a well-received book, "Developing Children's Liturgy: A Step by Step Guide," for Resource Publications, and gave many workshops for Catholic school elementary school and religious education teachers on preparing liturgy with children.

In 1995, Fabbro was named to The Tidings' original Editorial Council, which was established to structure and oversee the newspaper's editorial policy.

She is survived by Robert, her husband of 44 years; their children, Alexandria, Scott and Christopher; a sister, Noelle Deinkan of Thousand Oaks; a brother, Tim Price of Pasadena; her stepmother, Helen McCabe of San Marino; and her grandchildren, Andrew and Eric. Internment was at Calvary Cemetery.

The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Haramokngna American Indian Cultural Center.

Sr. M. Jerome Delsman, OP

Funeral Mass was held Sept. 8 at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse in Fremont, California for Dominican Sister M. Jerome Delsman, 89, who died Sept. 1.

Born in Hillsboro, Oregon, she taught both in Oregon and California. Locally, she taught at Sacred Heart High School, Los Angeles, and San Gabriel Mission High School, San Gabriel. Memorial donations may be made to the Dominican Sisters Retirement Fund, 43326 Mission Boulevard, Fremont, California 94539.
