| Loyola of Los Angeles, St. Bonaventure of Ventura and Crespi of Encino captured California Interscholastic Federation High School football titles last weekend.
Loyola won the Division I title Dec. 10 at Home Depot Center in Carson with a thrilling, come-from-ahead and come-from-behind triumph over Esperanza, 49-42. The Cubs led 28-14 at halftime, fell behind 42-35, and scored twice in the game's final minute to win its first title under first-year coach Jeff Kearin, who succeeded legendary Steve Grady (under whom Loyola won numerous titles in 29 years).
Quarterback Henry Burge threw six touchdown passes, including a 13-yarder to Taylor Joseph with 1:02 left to tie the game and --- after the Cubs recovered a fumble --- a 26-yarder to Marcus Lawrence with 52 seconds remaining for the victory. Lawrence also caught TD passes of 63 and 45 yards, and Joseph pulled in a 19-yard strike late in the first half. Adam Stout and Chad Peppars also scored for Loyola.
St. Bonaventure, meanwhile, earned its sixth CIF title in seven years by beating Moorpark 27-7 at Ventura High on Dec. 9 for the Division IV crown. For the Seraphs (14-0), it was their 95th win in their last 98 games and their 24th straight under coach Jon Mack.
Leading
the way was junior running back Michael Lee with 144 yards.
His 60-yard touchdown run in the second quarter gave the Seraphs
a 20-7 lead. Quarterback Matt Evans threw two touchdown passes,
to Ricky Garcia and Michael Williams, and ran for another
score.
At Lompoc, Crespi used Josh Morgan's running (two touchdowns) for a 24-14 win over Lompoc, their second straight Division X title. The Celts, who ended the year 11-3, capitalized on a key turnover to score shortly before halftime on a TD pass from Matt Wabby to Matt Gray that made the score 17-7.
Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks came up short in its quest for a fourth straight Division III championship as Dominguez of Compton ran up a 41-14 victory at Home Depot Center. The Knights' (13-1) winning streak ended at 35 games, despite an early 75-yard scoring run by quarterback Garrett Green that tied the score at 7.
