Services celebrated for
Msgr. Walsh, Msgr. Clyne

text only version

Funeral Masses were celebrated for two veteran pastors of the archdiocese who died during the past two weeks.

On Nov. 28, funeral Mass was held at Holy Angels Church in Arcadia for Msgr. Robert "Bertie" Walsh, pastor emeritus, who died Nov. 20 --- two days before his 88th birthday.

A native of County Sligo, Ireland, Msgr. Walsh completed his seminary studies at St. John's in Camarillo and was ordained in 1946. Two of his brothers, Pat and James, also entered the priesthood. Father Pat died at age 32 while on mission in Papua New Guinea and Msgr. James Walsh, founding pastor of St. Louise de Marillac Church in Covina, died in 1984.

For the first two decades of Msgr. Walsh's ministry, he served as an associate at seven parishes: Cathedral Chapel; St. Andrew, Pasadena; All Souls, Alhambra; Our Lady of Refuge, Long Beach; Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Newport Beach; Holy Innocents, Long Beach; and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Downey. From 1966-68, he also served as an administrator at Our Lady of Victory Church, Compton.

In 1969, he became founding pastor of St. Julie Billiart Church in Newbury Park where he served for four years. He was named pastor of Holy Angels in 1973 and headed the parish until his retirement in 1989. In 1996, he celebrated his jubilee at Holy Angels attended by hundreds of well-wishers.

Memorial contributions may be made in Msgr. Walsh's memory to the Holy Angels Education Endowment.

Funeral Mass was held Nov. 26 at Chapel of Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City for Msgr. James Bartley Clyne, 84, pastor emeritus of St. Sebastian Church, Los Angeles, who died Nov. 19.

Born in Hartford, Conn., he came to California as a child and attended St. Elizabeth's School, Altadena and St. Monica's, Santa Monica. He attended Los Angeles Junior Seminary and St. John's Seminary and was ordained in 1947. He served as an associate at Nativity Church in El Monte and St. Anthony Church in Long Beach.

After earning master's and Ph.D degrees in education at the Catholic University of America, Msgr. Clyne was appointed vice-principal of Bishop Conaty Memorial High School in 1953. He also served as principal of St. John Vianney (now Daniel Murphy) High School and coordinator of Bishop Alemany High School. In 1956, Msgr. Clyne became assistant superintendent of archdiocesan schools and was elevated to superintendent in 1960.

He served as pastor of St. Frances X. Cabrini Church (1966-71) and was named pastor of St. Sebastian Church in Westwood from 1971 until his retirement in 1985 when he became pastor emeritus. He has been a resident at Nazareth House since 1991. Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, David and Margaret Clyne of Camarillo.

Rose Leman

Funeral Mass will be held Dec. 2, 10 a.m., at Holy Trinity Church in Los Angeles for Rose Leman, 79, retired Tidings employee and former Archdiocesan Directory coordinator, who died Nov. 19.

Beginning in 1963, Leman served for 30 years with The Tidings, where she assisted in the circulation and advertising departments before taking over the Directory's production in 1971. In a farewell dedication printed in the 1993 Directory, Tidings' staff members commented: "Her feisty disposition, loyal devotion, huge heart and unflappable spirit will be greatly missed."

Sr. Maynard Werner, SSND

Funeral Mass was held Nov. 17 at the School Sisters of Notre Dame Motherhouse Chapel in St. Louis, Missouri for School Sister of Notre Dame Maynard Werner, 78, who died of complications from cancer Nov. 10 in Bridgeton, Mo.

Born and raised in St. Louis, Sister Werner taught for 53 years in several states. Locally, she taught at Santa Isabel School in Los Angeles from 1985-2004.

Survivors include a brother, Deacon Norman Werner of Frontenac, Mo., and a sister, Shirley Bunting of Hilton Head, S.C. Memorial contributions may be made to the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Resource Development, 320 East Ripa Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63125-2897.

Sr. Dulcinea Mrasz, SSpS

Funeral Mass was held Nov. 10 in the Chapel at the Convent of the Holy Spirit in Techny, Ill., for Holy Spirit Missionary Sister Dulcinea Mrasz, 95, who died Nov. 4.

Sister Mrasz spent many years teaching in schools in Arkansas, Illinois, Mississippi and Pennsylvania. In 1991, she was honored with an NAACP Award of Hancock County, Miss., for her many years of service as a local teacher.
