Marymount, Notre Dame Academy win volleyball titles

Marymount, Notre Dame Academy and Santa Margarita advanced to the Southern California state high school championships in girls volleyball, with Marymount and Notre Dame capturing CIF-Southern Section titles last weekend.

Paced by Kelly Irvin, Marymount's Sailors earned their fifth consecutive championship by defeating La Salle in the Division IV-AA final. The Sailors then defeated Chowchilla in the first round of the state Division IV championships on Nov. 22, while La sale was edged by Exeter in a close three-set match.

Notre Dame Academy, led by Megan Nash, won the Division III-A championship in a tough five-set final over Harvard-Westlake. The Regals then lost in a close match to San Diego Cathedral in the first round of the state Division III tournament, to finish 21-11.

Santa Margarita lost its Division III-AA final to Rim of the World, but advanced in Division III regional action by beating Mt. Whitney.

Football:

In football, Notre Dame, St. Bonaventure and Villanova Prep are still on course for undefeated seasons heading into quarterfinal playoff action Nov. 25.

Division I: Loyola (7-4) scored on a last-minute touchdown pass from Henry Burge to Taylor Joseph and beat Lakewood 20-16. The Cubs play Edison at Huntington Beach High in the quarterfinals.

Mater Dei (7-4) stopped Long Beach Cabrillo 27-18, and will take on Colton. Redlands East Valley defeated Santa Margarita (5-6) 21-20 in overtime; and Miller was a 51-9 winner over Servite (7-4).

Division II: Damien (6-5) ended its season with a 49-21 loss to Canyon County Canyon.

Division III: Notre Dame (11-0) continued its winning ways, 49-24 over Lynwood; St. Francis (9-2) defeated Downey 28-21; and Chaminade (9-2) edged Arcadia 33-31. In the quarterfinals, Notre Dame plays at Muir, St. Francis hosts Mira Costa, and Chaminade hosts Peninsula.

Division IV: St. Bonaventure (11-0) beat Oxnard 41-7, and will play at Newbury Park in the quarterfinals.

Division X: Tom Sua's five touchdowns led St. Joseph of Santa Maria (6-5) to one of the weekend's biggest upsets, 35-20 over second-seeded Gladstone (9-2). D.J. Holt had three TDs for Crespi (8-3) in a 32-12 win over Monrovia. Lompoc downed Cathedral (6-5) 22-3; and Serra (7-4) won easily, 49-14 over Palos Verdes.

The quarterfinal games include Crespi at North Torrance, and Serra at St. Joseph.

Division XI: La Salle (8-3) took care of Village Christian 31-2, and Verbum Dei (9-2) got past Carpinteria 22-20. Mary Star (3-6-2) was defeated 37-21 by Cerritos Valley Christian; St. Anthony (7-4) was blanked 54-0 by Grace Brethren; Bishop Diego (6-5) was edged 20-17 by San Jacinto.

In the quarters, La Salle plays Oaks Christian at San Marino High, and Verbum Dei is at San Jacinto.

Division XII: Vasquez beat Salesian (6-5) 21-13; Bell-Jeff (2-7) lost 51-7 to L.A. Baptist (5-3-1); and Cantwell-Sacred Heart (5-6) lost 43-3 to Ontario Christian.

Division XIII: Villanova Prep (11-0) stayed perfect with a 41-17 win over Maranatha, and will play St. Margaret's on Nov. 26, 6 p.m. at Nordhoff High School.

Other Sports:

In Girls Tennis, Villanova Prep was defeated by Beverly Hills, 12-6, in the Division IV finals.
