Hispanic Youth and Young Adult Encuentro: Nov. 5
Hispanic Catholic teens and young adults throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles will gather Nov. 5 for a one-day "Encuentro" to talk about their cultural experiences and needs as young Catholics and to encourage one another's leadership in the Catholic Church.
The 8:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m. bilingual Diocesan Encuentro takes place at Bishop Conaty-Our Lady of Loretto High School in Los Angeles and features dialogue sessions, Mass with Cardinal Roger Mahony and a live music concert. About 700 delegates, ages 14-39, are expected to attend.
Ana Grande, pastoral juvenil coordinator for the archdiocesan Office of Religious Education, said this historic meeting of Hispanic youth and young adults is an opportunity to embrace "our traditions as Hispanic Catholics which is very vital."
Young Hispanics at 55 parishes have been preparing for this gathering for several months. Those who have not been part of the parish Encuentro process, but would still like to attend the Diocesan Encuentro, are welcomed to register with Grande by calling (213) 637-7498 or e-mailing aigrande@la-archdiocese.org. The diocesan gathering will be followed by a State Encuentro in January at Loyola Marymount University and a National Encuentro in June at Notre Dame University.
Justice and Peace Recognition Dinner: Nov. 5
T he 16th Annual Justice and Peace Recognition Dinner with Cardinal Roger Mahony will honor One L.A.-IAF, national and local organizations funded by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development and ten local parishes committed to the work of social justice.
The dinner will take place Nov. 5 at Our Mother of Good Counsel Church from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at 2060 N. Vermont Ave. in Los Angeles. RSVP by Oct. 21 by calling (213) 637-7690.
ACCW Annual Conference: Nov. 7
The 58th Annual Conference of the Los Angeles Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women (ACCW) on Nov. 7 will feature guest speaker Lorna Kelly, an auctioneer, lecturer and author.
Raised in England, Kelly became the first female fine art auctioneer at Sotheby's in New York. At the height of her career she was inspired to travel to India to meet Mother Teresa of Calcutta and to work alongside the Missionaries of Charity tending to the poor. Her spiritual journeys also took her to the Middle East, the Far East and then closer to home in the South Bronx. She then wrote "The Camel Knows the Way" and is working on a second book.
Following Kelly's keynote address, Cardinal Roger Mahony will celebrate Mass, to be followed by a luncheon. The conference at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in Los Angles begins at 8:30 a.m. with a viewing of exhibits, followed by a call to order at 9:30 a.m. Tickets are $40 each and tables are for ten persons.

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin on Vatican II: Nov. 8
Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin and former secretary of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace will keynote a symposium on Forty Years After Vatican II.
The symposium will focus on the Vatican II document Gaudium Et Spes ("The Church in the Modern World"), and will take place Nov. 8, 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in Los Angeles.
Other presentations include "Marriage and Family" by Tom Chabolla, associate director of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development; "Development and Culture" by Barbara Busse, dean of the College of Communication and Fine Arts at Loyola Marymount University; "Economic and Social Life" by Consuelo Valdez of Proyecto Pastoral in Boyle Heights; "Political Community" by Sarah Bessel, student body president of Mount St. Mary's College; and "Peace and the Community of Nations" by Jesuit Father Greg Boyle, executive director of Homeboy Industries.

Serra Project Dinner: Nov. 9
The Serra Project, one of Los Angeles County's largest providers of low-cost housing to men, women and children living with HIV and AIDS, will honor Holy Cross Sister Carolita Hart and the Sisters of the Holy Cross with the 2005 Compassion Award Nov. 9 at the California Club.
