John Paul II and Greek Orthodox Archbishop Christodoulos flank an
icon of St. Paul at the ancient ruins of Areopagus hill in Athens
May 4, 2001. The Areopagus, where Paul preached to the Athenians,
represented the cultural center for dialogue and exchange of ideas.
In his encyclical Redemptoris Missio, Pope John Paul employs the Areopagus
as a symbol of the new "places" in which the Good News must be proclaimed,
and to which the mission of Christ is to be directed. REUTERS |
