Services held for Msgr. Atwill,
former East L.A. pastor

Funeral Mass was held Aug. 3 at Our Lady of Guadalupe (Hammel Street) Church in Los Angeles for Msgr. William Atwill, 89, pastor emeritus of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in East Los Angeles.

Born in Santa Monica, he attended St. Monica School. He took his first year of philosophy at St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park and completed his studies for the priesthood at St. John's Seminary in Camarillo. Following ordination in 1944, he served as an associate pastor at Santa Isabel Church (1944-53) and also St. Vibiana Cathedral (1953-56).

Msgr. Atwill ministered as pastor at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church twice, from 1959-70 and, again, from 1979-91. In-between, he was pastor at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Los Angeles. For nearly two decades, he served on the planning committee of the annual East L.A. December procession drawing thousands in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City.

Sr. Marilyn Lee, OP

Funeral Mass was held July 18 at Queen of the Rosary Chapel in Sinsinawa, Wisconsin for Dominican Sister Marilyn Lee, 93, who died July 12.

Born in Arcadia, Wisconsin, she joined the Sinsinawa Dominicans in 1931. She served as a primary and intermediate grade school teacher for 58 years in a number of states, including California, Illinois, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

In the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Sister Lee taught at All Saints School, Los Angeles, from 1963-1975. She was the CCD co-director at St. James, Torrance, from 1975-77 and also tutored in the learning center at St. Thomas More, Alhambra, from 1977-87. In addition, she cared for her stepmother, Rose, until her death in 1986.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sinsinawa Dominicans, 585 County Road Z, Sisinawa, Wisconsin, 53824-9701.

Sr. Mary Ambrose Devereux, SNJM

Funeral Mass was held July 14 at Convent of the Holy Names, Los Gatos, for Holy Names Sister Mary Ambrose Devereux, 92, who died July 10.

A third generation Californian, she taught science and math classes at secondary schools in Northern and Southern California and subsequently received her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from St. Louis University. In 1957, she joined the faculty of Holy Names College, Oakland, as Professor of Chemistry.

Sister Devereux was named President of Holy Names College in 1965. She also held membership on the Board of Trustees of St. Mary's College, Moraga and was the first woman elected to chair that body. Burial took place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward. Memorial donations may be made to the Ministry Fund, Sisters of the Holy Names, P.O. Box 907, Los Gatos, California 95031.
