The list may not include all the feast days in a particular month, but may include days not explicitly named in the Order of Prayer (Ordo).
August 1: St. Alphonsus Liguori, 18th century bishop and doctor of the church in Italy, founded the order of Redemptorists and is patron of moral theologians. Parish: St. Alphonsus, Los Angeles.
August 4: St. John Mary Vianney, known as the Cure d'Ars, renowned as a confessor, 19th century France. Parish: St. John Vianney, Hacienda Heights.
August 6: Transfiguration, feast of Jesus' transfiguration celebrated by the church since the 15th century; also commemorates anniversary of atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, 1945. Parish: Transfiguration, Los Angeles.
August 8: St. Dominic, founded the Order of Preachers in 1216 and is the patron of astronomers. Parish: St. Dominic, Los Angeles.
August 10: St. Lawrence, third century martyr and a patron of Rome. Parish: St. Lawrence Martyr, Redondo Beach.
August 11: St. Clare, follower of St. Francis, founded the order of Poor Clares, respected as a "new leader of women." Parish: St. Clare, Santa Clarita.
August 14: St. Maximilian Kolbe, priest and martyr, offered his life for a fellow prisoner in World War II, canonized in 1982. Parish: St. Maximilian Kolbe, Westlake Village.
August 15: Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, proclaimed a doctrine of the church by Pope Pius XII in 1950. Parishes: Assumption, Los Angeles; Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Pasadena.
August 16: St. Stephen of Hungary, first king of Hungary, known for helping the poor, canonized in 1083. Parish: St. Stephen, Los Angeles.
August 18: St. Helen, fourth century empress who found the true Cross. Parish: St. Helen, South Gate.
August 18: St. Jane Frances de Chantal, 17th century widow and founder of the Congregation of the Visitation, established some 85 convents. Parish: St. Jane Frances de Chantal, North Hollywood.
August 19: St. John Eudes, priest in Normandy who found the Congregation of Jesus and Mary in the 17th century. Parish: St. John Eudes, Chatsworth.
August 20: St. Bernard, Benedictine abbot and doctor of the church; all of Europe mourned his death in 1153. Parishes: St. Bernard, Bellflower and Los Angeles.
August 21: St. Pius X, 20th century pope noted for his charity and advocating reception of Communion for young children. Parish: St. Pius X, Santa Fe Springs.
August 22: Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary, feast instituted by Pope Pius XII in 1954 to venerate the Mother of God. Parish: Maria Regina, Gardena.
August 23: St. Rose of Lima, born in Lima, Peru, known for extreme mortification, first canonized saint from the "New World" in 1671. Parishes: St. Rose of Lima, Maywood and Simi Valley.
August 24: St. Bartholomew, first century apostle. Parish: St. Bartholomew, Long Beach.
August 25: St. Louis of France, 13th century king and father of 11 children, a man of justice and mercy. Parish: St. Louis of France, La Puente.
August 27: St. Monica, mother of St. Augustine, fourth century, patroness of mothers. Parish: St. Monica, Santa Monica.
August 28: St. Augustine of Hippo, doctor of the church, wrote the famous Confessions, fifth century. Parish: St. Augustine, Culver City.
August 29: St. John the Baptist: feast commemorates his martyrdom, proclaimed the coming of Christ. Parish: St. John the Baptist, Baldwin Park. |
