Services held for Fr. Felix Migliazzo, former journalist

Funeral Mass was held June 1 at San Carlos Cathedral in Monterey for Father Felix Migliazzo, who died May 21 of lung cancer.

Born in Rockvale, Colo., he spent his formative years in Los Angeles, attending St. Aloysius School through the eighth grade. At age 13, he became a resident at St. Joseph College Seminary in Mountain View where he began studying to become a Maryknoll missionary priest. He was ordained a priest in 1949 after completing theology studies at Maryknoll Headquarters in Ossing, N.Y.

He served as Maryknoll's vocational and public relations director in New York, Michigan, Illinois and California for 15 years. From 1964-67, he did missionary work with Pacific Islanders. After receiving permission from the Superior General of Maryknoll, he came to work with Bishop Harry Clinch in the new diocese of Monterey and ministered as assistant pastor at the Carmel Mission beginning in December 1967.

In 1970, he became editor of the Monterey Diocesan newspaper. He also served as director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith and Holy Childhood as well as director of Catholic Charities and Refugee Resettlement. In addition, he worked as a chaplain at The Ave Maria Convalescent Hospital. He served as pastor of St. Jude Church, Marina (1976-78), and at Old Mission San Juan Bautista (1984-87). He continued working with the Society for the Propagation of the Faith and Holy Childhood until his retirement in 2002.

Survivors include two brothers, Vincent, parishioner at Visitation Church in Los Angeles, and Samuel of Westminister; two sisters, Virginia Rosato of Vacaville and Albina Reinig of Winton; 18 nieces and nephews and 28 grandnieces and grandnephews. Memorial donations may be made to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, 366 Fifth Ave., New York, NY 10117-0154.

Sr. Louise Judge, BVM

Funeral Mass was held July 13 at Marian Hall Chapel in Dubuque, Iowa, for Sister of Charity Louise Judge, 98, who died July 7.

Born in Boone, Iowa, she entered the BVM congregation after high school. She taught school in Arizona, California, Illinois, Iowa and Missouri. In Southern California, she taught at Mater Dei High School, Santa Ana (1959-64); Bellarmine-Jefferson High School, Burbank (1950-55 and 1968-73) and was on staff at Bell-Jeff (1973-81). From 1981-85, she worked in parish ministry at St. Robert Bellarmine Church.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Sisters of Charity, BVM Retirement Fund, 1100 Carmel Dr., Dubuque, IA 52003.

Fr. Thomas Patrick Delaney, SJ

Funeral Mass was held July 19 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Santa Barbara for Jesuit Father Thomas Patrick Delaney, 78, who died July 13 of cancer.

Born in Dorchester, Mass., he spent two years in the Navy before entering the California Province of the Society of Jesus at Los Gatos in 1948. In 1961, he was ordained to the priesthood by Cardinal Cushing of Boston.

Father Delaney's ministry was divided between high school teaching and parish work. Locally, he taught for several years at Loyola High School and ministered full-time at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Santa Barbara since 1991. Jesuit community members remember him as an excellent teacher and priest who read avidly and thought critically.

Surviving family members include his sisters: Pauline Ziniti, Virginia Ray, Jean Delaney and Helen L'Heureux; brothers: Paul, John, Francis, and many in-laws, nieces and nephews. Memorial donations may be made to Notre Dame School, 21 E. Sola St., Santa Barbara, CA 93101. Burial was at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery in Santa Clara.

Dorothy Lester, IHM

Funeral Mass was held July 2 at Calvary Cemetery for Immaculate Heart Community Member Dorothy Lester (Sister Gregory), who died June 28.

A native of Santa Barbara, Lester entered the novitiate of the Immaculate Heart Sisters in Hollywood after graduating from Immaculate Heart College. In between teaching assignments in several locations, including Long Beach, she earned a master's degree in library science from Immaculate Heart College.

In 1963, she was elected secretary general of the community. In that capacity, she recorded the trials associated with the community's efforts to respond to the call of Vatican II to renew and modernize religious life. In the '70s and '80s, she served as a librarian in the Glendale Public Library, retiring in 1984. Community members called her an "island of calm no matter how stormy the sea around her." Burial was at Calvary Cemetery.
