St. Joseph HS alumni to sponsor benefit concert for ill classmate

San Pedro Region
text only version

Alumni from the St. Joseph High School class of 1980 will host a "Summer Lovin' Concert" to benefit Linda Schorr Coryell on July 16, 7:30 p.m., at the Flynn Center on its Lakewood campus.

Last August, Coryell --- a fourth grade teacher in the Corona Norco School District --- fell from a ladder and received severe head trauma that resulted in her being in an induced coma. While hospitalized for several months, complications from the coma led to circulation problems that caused Coryell to lose her right hand.

Although Coryell is now home with her family in Norco, she continues to need outpatient therapy for speech, walking and use of her prosthetic hand. "Obviously, Linda has not yet been able to return to her beloved job," said Margaret McFarlane, an event coordinator. "That is why her classmates are providing this support; 100 percent of the benefit concert proceeds will go to Linda and her family's financial needs."

The concert will feature singer-composer Susan J. Paul and stand-up comedian Paula Faust, both classmates of Coryell. Paul is an accomplished vocalist who has produced four music CDs since 1991 and continues to perform in the Southern California area. Faust has done stand-up comedy for the past nine years and has performed in various comedy clubs and stage venues. Both women have teamed up in the past for other fundraising events. Together they plan to raise thousands of dollars for Linda's family because, said McFarlane, "other than give love and support, that's what sisters do for each other."

The Benefit Concert will also offer opportunities for business sponsorships. Silent auction items will be up for bid, and items raffled throughout the evening. The St. Joseph and St. John Bosco classes of 1980 will celebrate their 25th reunion immediately following the concert.

Ticket price for this family event is $20 and can be purchased at the door or by calling (714) 693-1449. For more information about the concert, sponsorship and Linda's story, visit the susanjpaul.com website.
