Mission Building Model Contest held at San Gabriel

The first Mission History Day at San Gabriel Mission in San Gabriel brought out creativity from students and children from across Los Angeles County.

Twenty-two contestants from students at San Gabriel Valley and other area schools participated in a Mission Building Model Exhibit and Contest on June 4. These fourth graders showed their models and were award merits in school-based categories. Judges selected the following winners:

---San Gabriel Mission Elementary School: Victor Vega, first place; Erin MacDonald, second place; and Anna De Peralta, third place.

---San Gabriel Unified School District: Sophia Saw, first place; Jessica Woo, second place; and Anthony Graca, third place.

---Other Elementary Schools: Jesse Tovar, first place: Evelyn Marquez, second place; and Addison Farmer, third place.

The Overall Most Representative Model of a Mission award was given to Daniela

Garcia, while Adam Madrid received the Most Interesting Model of a Mission award. San Gabriel Mission Elementary School and Nelson Elementary School in Hacienda-La Puente Unified School District tied for the most entries.

Held once a month on a Saturday, Mission History Day was created so visitors can learn more about mission history, people, cultures, events, buildings, artwork, artifacts, plant life and more. Additional contests are scheduled for future months.
