MASSACRE
SURVIVOR --- John Guiliano translates for Rufina Amaya as she recounts
the massacre in the tiny mountain hamlet of El Mozote, during which
three of her children were systematically killed along with hundreds
of other unarmed civilians by a Salvadoran army battalion. "If God
has let me escape, it's for a reason," said Amaya, who for years has
given witness to the horrors of the massacre. Pressure by the international
community is still needed, she said, in order for the case to be reopened
in El Salvador, and for the truth of what happened to be fully faced.
Over the years, Amaya's story has been reported in major U.S. media
outlets. The Organization of American States reopened an investigation
in March.
