Fr. Andrew Pisano, Rosehill pastor emeritus, dies

Funeral Mass was held June 27 at St. John of God Retirement and Care Center in Los Angeles for Father Andrew Pisano, 86, who died June 15. Father Pisano was pastor emeritus of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Rosehill) in Los Angeles.

Born in Andrano, Italy, Father Pisano was ordained in Rome in 1942 and ministered in Italian parishes for a decade before coming to the U.S. He served as an associate pastor of several local parishes, including St. Joseph, Hawthorne; St. Cecilia and St. Malachy, Los Angeles; and Holy Innocents, Long Beach.

Father Pisano also ministered as a chaplain at St. Francis Hospital, Lynwood in 1957 and St. Ann's Home for the Aged from 1958-1962. In 1978, he was appointed pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church (Rosehill) in East Los Angeles, where he served for five years until his retirement.

Interment will be in Italy. Condolences may be sent to Father Pisano's nephew, Giuseppe Giorgiani, c/o Msgr. August Moretti, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, 2460 E. Orange Grove Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91107.

Adam Hefner

Funeral Mass was held June 18 at All Souls Mortuary Chapel in Long Beach for Adam Hefner, 97, who died June 11. Hefner was the father of Msgr. Helmut Hefner, rector at St. John's Seminary in Camarillo. Other family survivors include a son, Otto Hefner, and a daughter, Hilda Franzen. Interment was at All Souls Cemetery.

Sr. Virginia Petty, SP

Funeral Mass was held June 14 in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, for Providence Sister Virginia (Virginia Ruth) Petty, 91, who died June 8.

Born in Central City, Kentucky, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence in 1935 and ministered for a half-century as a junior high teacher in California, the District of Columbia, Illinois and Indiana. Locally, she taught at St. Elisabeth in Van Nuys, St. Anthony in Gardena, St. Therese in Alhambra and El Segundo High School in El Segundo. In 1990, she returned to the Indiana Motherhouse and worked in prayer ministry.

Survivors include a cousin, Mother Francis, OCD, of Louisville, Kentucky, and members of her religious community. Burial was in the Cemetery of the Sisters of Providence in Indiana.

Sr. Mary Vincent Hephner, OP

Funeral Mass was held May 14 at St. Catherine's Military Academy Chapel in Anaheim for Dominican Sister Mary Vincent Hephner, who died May 8.

Born in Los Angeles, Sister Hephner entered the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose in 1938, after graduating from Sacred Heart High School (then Sacred Heart Academy) in Lincoln Heights. She taught for 45 years in Northern and Southern California Catholic schools, including St. Ignatius and Sacred Heart Elementary, Los Angeles; San Gabriel Mission, San Gabriel; Flintridge Sacred Heart, La Caņada; and St. Catherine's Military Academy, Anaheim.

Burial was at Calvary Cemetery, Los Angeles. Memorial donations may be made to St. Catherine's Military Academy (tuition assistance), 215 N. Harbor Blvd., Anaheim, CA 92805, or Dominican Sisters, 43326 Mission Blvd., Fremont, CA 94539-5829.

Wilfred Barreto Negrete

Funeral Mass was held May 6 at Santa Rosa Church in San Fernando for Wilfred Barreto Negrete, 78, who died May 1 after a lengthy illness. Negrete was the father of Jesuit Father Wayne Negrete, associate pastor at Blessed Sacrament Church in Los Angeles. Other surviving family members include his wife of 54 years, Maria del Carmen Negrete; sons Wilfred and William; daughters Wendy Leyva and Wanda Gastelo; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Sr. Agatha Coniglio, CSJ

Funeral Mass was held June 22 at Carondelet Center in Los Angeles for Carondelet Sister Agatha Coniglio, (Sister John Bosco) 91, who died June 17.

An eigh graduate of St. Patrick School, Los Angeles, she attended St. Mary's Academy in Inglewood where she met the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. She entered the religious community in 1934 and taught for a number of years in California and the Northwest. From 1970-78, she volunteered for mission in Peru where she ministered to the sick and taught disadvantaged children.

At age 86, Sister Coniglio began her retirement. She remained active sewing for the sisters and sewing and cooking for fundraising projects. For CSJ Days, she would make 25 dozen donuts with the aid of "helpers/samplers."

Bobette Knittel

A memorial Mass was held June 11 at Sacred Heart Church in Lancaster for Bobette Christine Knittel, 57, who died while serving on a mission in Kenya, Africa.

A resident of the Antelope Valley for 30 years, Knittel was a lay minister at several parishes and the founder of Ministries of the Heart, a ministry aiding African Catholic seminaries. She was active in the RCIA program at Sacred Heart Church and had served as a DRE for St. Mary Church in Palmdale and also Incarnation Church in Glendale.

Survivors include her husband of 35 years, Fred, seven children, nine grandchildren, five siblings and her mother. Interment will be at St. Andrew's Abbey.
