Holy Connections: Saints and parishes

Each month, The Tidings lists dates in the church's calendar which commemorate saints and other noteworthy celebrations, and archdiocesan parishes named in the saints' honor. The list may not include all the feast days in a particular month, but may include days not explicitly named in the Order of Prayer (Ordo).

July 1: Blessed Junípero Serra, Franciscan Friar who founded the first nine California Missions, beatified in 1988; buried at Mission San Carlos, Carmel. Parishes: Blessed Junípero Serra, Camarillo and Lancaster.

July 3: St. Thomas, apostle of Christ, patron of architects and builders, declared the Apostle of India in 1972 by Pope Paul VI. Parish: St. Thomas the Apostle, Los Angeles.

July 6: St. Maria Goretti, Italian virgin and martyr, died in 1902, canonized in 1950. Parish: St. Maria Goretti, Long Beach.

July 11: St. Benedict, sixth century abbot, founded monastery of Monte Cassino and known as the Patriarch of Western Monasticism. Parish: St. Benedict, Montebello.

July 14: Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, 17th century, first Native American to be beatified, called the "Lily of the Mohawks." Parish: Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, Santa Clarita.

July 16: Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Carmelite feast since the 14th century to honor St. Simon Stock who received the brown scapular by the Blessed Mother on this day in 1251. Parish: Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Santa Barbara.

July 18: St. Camillus de Lellis, founder of the nursing congregation of the Ministers of the Sick, canonized in 1746, patron saint of nurses. Parish: St. Camillus, Los Angeles.

July 21: St. Lawrence of Brindisi, Capuchin Franciscan priest and doctor of the Church, 17th century. Parish: St. Lawrence of Brindisi, Los Angeles.

July 22: St. Mary Magdalen, first witness to Christ's Resurrection, became the "apostle to the apostles." Parishes: St. Mary Magdalen, Camarillo and Los Angeles.

July 23: St. Bridget of Sweden, 14th century widow, founder of the Bridgettine Order and co-patroness of Europe. Parish: St. Bridget of Sweden, Van Nuys.

July 25: St. James, apostle of Christ, patron saint of Spain. Parish: St. James, Redondo Beach.

July 25: St. Christopher, legendary third century saint, named "Christ-bearer," patron of travelers and motorists. Parish: St. Christopher, West Covina.

July 26: Sts. Joachim and Anne, parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Parishes: St. Ann, Los Angeles; St. Anne, North Hollywood (Melkite-Greek) and Santa Monica.

July 29: St. Martha, sister of Mary and Lazarus, patroness of housewives and waiters. Parishes: St. Martha, Huntington Park and Valinda.

July 31: St. Ignatius of Loyola, 16th century founder of the Jesuit order, canonized in 1622, patron of retreats and spiritual exercises. Parish: St. Ignatius of Loyola, Los Angeles.
