Catholic teams win CIF softball, baseball titles

text only version

Catholic high school teams from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and Diocese of Orange captured California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section titles in several sports this spring, led by Pomona Catholic and Cantwell-Sacred Heart (softball), Mater Dei (baseball), Loyola (boys volleyball) and La Reina (girls swimming).

Among the notable efforts:

Softball: Pomona Catholic won the Division V title, 3-2 in eight innings over Flintridge Prep. The Pacers (22-6) were led by senior shortstop Kim Silagyi (.457 average) and junior pitcher Caitlyn Jackson (0.77 ERA, 160 strikeouts).

Cantwell-Sacred Heart (17-9) of Montebello captured the Division VII championship with a 1-0 win over Village Christian of Santa Maria, which had eliminated Serra in the semifinals 2-0. Senior pitcher Samantha Morales won eight straight games for the Cardinals, including the final.

La Salle defeated Alverno 4-2 to gain the Division VI final, where it lost to Whittier Christian 5-4. Mater Dei reached the Division I semifinals, losing to Valencia 3-0. Alemany and Chaminade reached the Division IV semifinals, each losing by 1-0 scores to Dos Pueblos and Paramount, respectively.

Baseball: Mater Dei won Division I title, 9-3 over Riverside Poly. St. Paul reached the Division V finals, losing to Serrano 5-3.

Boys Volleyball: Loyola won its third straight Division I title with a 3-of-4 sets victory over Mira Costa. Since 1983, the Cubs have won nine CIF volleyball championships.

St. Bernard and Providence both gained the Division V quarterfinals, where they each lost 31-29 last-set matches.

Girls Swimming: In CIF-SS team competition, La Reina was first in Division IV, Santa Margarita seventh in Division I, and Mayfield fourth in Division III.

Boys Swimming: Damien was second and Mater Dei sixth in Division I; La Salle was eighth in Division III.

Boys Track: Battling through a tough season after the death of longtime coach Greg Wells, Loyola's Mark Matusak won the state high school title in the 1600-meter run and placed second in the 3200-meter event. Teammate Jordan Paul was third in the 110-meter high hurdles and 300-meter intermediate hurdles, as the Cubs earned second place in the boys' competition. Loyola had earlier finished second in the CIF Division II team championships.
