Notre Dame, St. Bonaventure, Crespi win CIF grid titles

text only version

Notre Dame High School of Sherman Oaks capped an unbeaten (14-0) season by winning its third consecutive CIF-Southern Section Division III football championship last weekend.

Additionally, St. Bonaventure of Ventura (13-1) made it five CIF titles in six years by capturing the Division IV crown, and Crespi of Encino (10-4) completed a championship season in Division X.

For Notre Dame, three 100-yard-plus rushing performances paced the 38-21 title game triumph Dec. 10 against Dominguez of Compton. Running back Cary Harris had 120 yards and three touchdowns, quarterback Garrett Green gained b118 yards and a touchdown, and Rodney Glass gained 100 yards and a 75-yard TD run to lead coach Kevin Rooney's Knights.

For St. Bonaventure, the 42-14 whipping of intercity rival Ventura Dec. 10 was made possible by alert plays, even though the Seraphs were outgained by more than 200 yards. Two fumbles were run in for scores (by Cory Finnerty and Steven Lippert) and two kickoffs were returned all the way (by Matt Lee and Tommy Dixon).

And for Crespi, Randle Harris led the way with 306 yards and three touchdowns (from 64, 14 and 22 yards) in a 32-14 win over North Torrance High at Pierce College Dec. 10. The Celts overcame two interception runbacks for scores by the Saxons, posted a 434-89 edge in total yardage, and won their first CIF title since 1986.
