Honoring La Virgen and San Juan Diego

text only version

Feast day celebrations highlighted a four-day presentation of events honoring the Patroness of the Americas, Our Lady of Guadalupe, last weekend at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

A Mass on Dec. 9 marked the feast of St. Juan Diego, to whom the Blessed Mother appeared four times on the hill of Tepeyac in Mexico City on Dec. 9, 1531. Performances by Mexican folk dancers from Oaxaca, Mexico and a traditional banda de viento (wind instrument band) were included in the celebration.

In between the feast day celebrations, on Dec. 10 the Latino Theater Company presented "La Virgen de Guadalupe, Dios Inantzin," a dramatization depicting the miracles of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Told in Spanish and Nahautl (the language of the Aztecs), the play featured noted opera star Suzanna Guzmán in the role of Mary.

The festivities culminated early Dec. 12 with the celebration of the traditional Mañanitas (sunrise) Mass on the feast day of La Virgen
