| You could call this weekend "Santa weekend" for the scores of volunteers involved in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels' Adopt-A-Family program.
On
the morning of Dec. 18, volunteers will assemble at the Cathedral
for a prayer service with Cardinal Roger Mahony, who will
then join them as they deliver Christmas baskets --- large
boxes, actually --- to nearly 250 families in the downtown
skid row area of Los Angeles.
"It is always an exciting time for everyone," noted Lydia Gamboa, Adopt-A-Family program coordinator. "The families who receive the gifts are always so grateful. And the volunteers who deliver them are always so thrilled to help make Christmas wishes come true."
Which is why so many volunteers turn out year after year. "Last weekend, we had the biggest turnout of volunteers we've ever had --- including a wonderful group of kids from Our Lady Help of Christians School in Lincoln Heights --- to help sort the food that the families will receive," said Gamboa.
"We've had great response from schools, from families, from individuals who believe in this program, because they know it works. We are so grateful to everyone, the donors and volunteers who have contributed to making this program a success."
Approximately
600 children are included in the families expected to be assisted
by Adopt-A-Family. Canned and/or boxed foods, new clothing,
school supplies, blankets, furniture and toys are among the
items most desired. Cash contributions are also welcome to
assist families, "and it's not too late to make a donation,"
said Gamboa.
The gathering of volunteers begins at 7 a.m. Dec. 18, with the prayer service at 7:30 a.m. and delivery beginning at 8 a.m. Next week's issue of The Tidings will report on the distribution of Christmas gift baskets to the families being served by Adopt-A-Family.
