YLI presents gift to St. John's

Santa Barbara Region
text only version

The annual presentation of the Young Ladies' Institute Golden Jubilee Burse to the Los Angeles Archdiocese in support of seminary programs and priesthood education took place recently at St. John's Seminary, Camarillo.

The day began with Mass in the Theology Chapel with Santa Barbara Region Auxiliary Bishop Thomas J. Curry presiding and Msgr. Helmut Hefner, St. John's rector, concelebrating. A brunch followed that was attended by over 85 YLI members and their families, joined by many of the seminarians and men attending the Day of Discernment.

District Deputy Joan Thomas, hostess for the day, presented Bishop Curry with a check for $7,700, an increase over last year's contribution and boosting to more than $2.5 million the money presented to the archdiocese by YLI in western dioceses since 1937. The Los Angeles Archdiocese has six YLIs, including four from Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. Colleen Smith from Long Beach, grand first vice president of YLI, was an honored guest.

After the brunch, Dr. Paul F. Ford, St. John's professor of Systematic Theology and Liturgy, led a tour of the main and side chapels and gave a brief history of the seminary
