Adopt-A-Family recipients hope for warmer holiday

text only version

This year, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels' Adopt-A-Family program hopes to assist 250 families with food, clothing and other essentials to be presented in gift baskets on Dec. 18.

Canned and/or boxed foods, new clothing, school supplies, blankets, furniture and toys are among the items most desired. Cash contributions are also welcome to assist families, some of whose stories will be described in The Tidings this week and next. For information, contact Lydia Gamboa, (213) 637-7501.

---#18: For Juan and Flor, living in a one-room apartment is a luxury since they have their own bathroom and kitchen. They have one 2-month-old son, Miguel, who is in need of baby clothes. The three of them sleep on a twin mattress with no bed frame. The parents asked for warm winter clothing for Miguel and a rain jacket for Juan.

---#36: Little Daniel (age 8) greeted us at the door of his one-room apartment with a community style kitchen. His famikly has the luxury of having their own bathroom. Little Daniel was so happy to see us he asked if this year we could get him a school uniform -- navy blue pants and a white shirt. His mother, who said she is so grateful to the Adopt-A-Family program, admitted she didn't know how she was going to provide Christmas for Daniel.

---#110: Keeping a roof over his family's heads and providing food for them is Ricardo's main priority. He works in the garment district and also is an ice-cream vendor. With the winter months here, business is down and money is tight. With three children, Ricardo and his wife keep the family strong with their faith. He asked if we could help with a portable heater since there is no heating in their building.

---#92: The Gomez family lives in a very small one-room apartment. When we arrived, the father was setting up an air mattress for his wife and him to sleep on. He stated that he was very fortunate to have even this much for his family. The three children sleep on a twin mattress. The mother asked if we could bring jackets for the children as this year's winter is so cold.
