Playoffs: Mater Dei heads for
state title match

Mater Dei High School turned the tables and defeated Edison of Huntington Beach for the Southern California Regional Division II girls volleyball championship Nov. 30.

The win --- a reversal of the Division II-AA final two weeks ago --- puts the Monarchs in the state finals against San Jose Mitty. That match will be played Dec. 4 at Cerritos College.

Marymount High School, meanwhile, could not overcome the loss of a key starter and fell in straight sets to Francis Parker of San Diego in the Southern California Regional Division IV title match. The Sailors were seeking a fifith straight state championship.

Football

Catholic schools remained in the hunt for CIF-SS titles in three divisions. Results from Nov. 26 and 27:

Division I: All remaining Serra League teams lost. Long Beach Poly defeated St. John Bosco 26-7; Lakewood held off Loyola 14-7; and Los Alamitos stopped Bishop Amat 52-6.

Division III: One Catholic school finalist is assured. Notre Dame outscored Muir 49-26 to gain the semifinals as host team Dec. 4 against St. Francis, which edged Redondo 17-16. St. Paul was beaten 13-10 by Peninsula.

Division IV: St. Bonaventure beat Hawthorne 35-8 and will meeet San Luis Obispo in the semis Dec. 4 at Oxnard Pacifica High School.

Division X: An all-Catholic school final remains a possibility. Crespi blanked Morro Bay 15-0 and will play at Lompoc in a Dec. 4 semifinal. St. Joseph (Santa Maria) outscored Cathedral 42-14 and will host North Torrance Dec. 3.

Division XI: Verbum Dei was beaten 52-0 by Oaks Christian, while La Salle lost 34-16 to Valley Christian.
