Playoff Report: Marymount wins
again in volleyball

Marymount High School survived a strong challenge from Sunset League Rival Notre Dame Academy to win its fourth straight CIF-Southern Section Division IV-AA girls volleyball title Nov. 20.

The Sailors (30-8) and the Regals (23-7) both qualified for the state tournament in Division IV, which began earlier this week with the Southern California regionals. Alex Ayers, Sue Carls and Jamie Sabol led Marymount, while Bridget Hearst and Taylor O'Brien starred for Notre Dame.

In Division II-AA play, Mater Dei was upset by Edison of Huntington Beach for the championship, but still made the Division II tournament.

In Division III-AA, Santa Margarita defeated Rim of the World for the championship, and advanced to the state Division III tournament.

Football

Results from last week's first round games included the following (with quarterfinal action scheduled Nov. 26 and 27):

Division I: St. John Bosco beat Fountain Valley 16-9 and will play Long Beach Poly; Loyola stopped Edison 28-14 and will play Lakewood; Bishop Amat defeated Redlands 34-16 and will play Los Alamitos. Mater Dei and Santa Margarita both lost.

Division III: Notre Dame beat Downey 58-0 and will play Muir; St. Francis beat Palmdale 19-10 and will play Redondo; St. Paul outscored Crescenta Valley 77-35 and will play Peninsula; and Chaminade lost to Dominguez 35-13.

Division IV: St. Bonaventure beat Moorpark 29-14 and will play Hawthorne.

Division X: Crespi whipped Temple City 52-14 and will play Morro Bay; St. Joseph (Santa Maria) beat El Segundo 14-6 and will play Cathedral, which defeated Bassett 42-25; Bosco Tech lost 28-20 to North Torrance.

Division XI: Verbum Dei beat Paraclete 32-7 and will play Oaks Christian; La Salle beat Beaumont 35-20 and will play Valley Christian, which beat Bishop Diego 23-0; Mary Star lost to Village Christian 42-7.

Division XII: Bell-Jeff lost to Rosamond 26-12; Cantwell Sacred Heart lost to Aquinas 53-6; St. Genevieve lost to Grace Brethren 56-0.
