Chiapas' bishop to visit Los Angeles
Nov. 20

text only version

Archbishop Emeritus Don Samuel Ruíz Garcia of Chiapas will speak on "Celebrating Peace in a Time of War" Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. Self Help Graphics and Art, 3802 Cesar E. Chavez Ave. in East Los Angeles. Prior to his remarks a panel will discuss transnational organizing and the Chicano movement beginning at 1 p.m.

The archbishop also will celebrate Mass Nov. 20 at 5:30 p.m. at Our Lady Queen of Angels Church (La Placita) at 535 N. Main Street in Los Angeles.

In 1994 the archbishop acted as a mediator in the conflict between Ejercito Zapatista de Liberación Nacional and the Mexican government. He also fasted for 17 days in order to prevent a new armed confrontation between the Mexican Army and the Zapatista Army of National Liberation.
