Cathedral offers musical events, holiday festival

text only version

To round out the month of All Souls, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels will present an Evening Prayer and Choral Concert on Nov. 21 at 4 p.m., part of an active end-of-the-year program of music and entertainment.

Joined by the Cathedral Choir under the direction of Frank Brownstead, Msgr. Kevin Kostelnik, Cathedral pastor, will preside over the Evening Prayer service. Immediately following Evening Prayer, the Cathedral Choir will present Gabriel Fauré's "Requiem," accompanied by Samuel S. Soria, organist; Jennifer Duke, harp; and Steve Scharf, violin, with soloists Lauren Flahive (soprano), Nicholas Probst (baritone) and Julian Fieldler (bass).

This event is free but a freewill offering is gladly accepted to support the work of the music program at the cathedral.

On Dec. 18, a 7:30 p.m. performance by the Los Angeles Children's Chorus will highlight a Family Christmas Festival at the cathedral. The musical portion also will feature guest performances by local school choirs (noon-6 p.m.). Those who wish to participate are invited to contact Tiffany Russo at the Cathedral, (213) 680-5275 or trusso@olacathedral.org no later than Nov. 19.

The Festival will also feature Christmas Nativity animal petting (11 a.m.-6 p.m.), exploration of the children's animal garden (all day), and a lighting ceremony for the Cathedral Christmas Tree (6:30 p.m.). Also on view throughout Advent will be "O Holy Night: A Child's View of Christmas," featuring artwork by fourth grade students on the theme, "The True Meaning of Christmas."

Looking ahead to 2005, the schedule of musical events at the Cathedral includes:

---Organ Recital by New York organist Stephen Tharp, Jan. 28, 8 p.m.

---Evening Prayer and Lenten Choral Music, March 6, 4 p.m.

---Organ Recital by Cathedral organist Samuel Soria, May 6, 8 p.m.

---Valley Cultural Center Chamber Orchestra with Cathedral Choir and Organ, June 18, 7:30 p.m.

---Piano Recital by Andrea Anderson, July 30, 7:30 p.m.

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is located at 555 W. Temple St., with entrances to the underground parking structure off Hill Street and Temple Street. Parking at the cathedral is $5. For more information call (213) 680-5205 or visit the cathedral website at www.olacathedral.org.
