Whole community catechesis addressed at workshops

Whole Community Catechesis will be addressed at several upcoming workshops in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

---The Santa Barbara Regional Congress Oct. 30 will present "Finding Your Way Into Whole Community Catechesis" (9:45 a.m.), with Peggi Ransom, director of faith formation at St. Mary Magdalen Church, Camarillo. At 11:30 a.m., Sister of Charity Sister Mary Denise Dietrich, faith formation director at La Purísima Concepción Church in Lompoc, will lead "Family Fun Day: Catechesis for the Whole Family." And at 2 p.m., Sylvia DeVillers, author of "Lectionary-Based Catechesis for Children: A Catechist's Guide" (Paulist Press), will lead "The Question of the Week: How Does the Lectionary Inspire Whole Community Catechesis?"

The Santa Barbara Congress takes place at Bishop Garcia Diego High School, Santa Barbara. For information, call (805) 569-1135.

---At the San Gabriel Regional Congress Nov. 6, sessions on whole community catechesis will focus on helping parents develop "households of faith" and turn present day school-house religious education programs into a model that develops faith sharing and community building.

Session workshops include how to develop a question of the week for parish faith-sharing activities; ways to assist families to develop households of faith; how to organize successful parish assemblies and understand assembly dynamics; ways to help a community to learn more about and reflect on Jesus Christ; and how to teach peace and the consistent life ethic.

The congress takes place at the Sheraton Suites Fairplex Hotel, 601 W. McKinley Ave. in Pomona, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. For information, call (626) 962-7707.

---The Office of Religious Education will sponsor two November workshops looking at the concrete needs of households of faith and explore intergenerational parish assemblies that can inspire and strengthen families to make a difference at home, in the parish and in the world.

The first workshop takes place Nov. 18, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at Holy Family Church, 1507 Fremont Ave. in South Pasadena. It will be repeated Nov. 19 (same time) at St. Pancratius Church, 3519 St. Pancratius Pl. in Lakewood.

Presenter Jo Rotunno serves as a catechetical specialist for RCL (Resources for Christian Living) in Allen, Texas. While living in Los Angeles for 25 years she served as a Catholic school teacher, parish catechist, master catechist and diocesan religious education consultant for the Archdiocese. She received her M.A. in Religious Studies from Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles, and is the author of the recent book "Heritage of Faith."

Registration is $15 per person or $10 per person for groups of 7-10 people. For more information, call (213) 637-7358.
