Br. Thomas Levi, FSC
Funeral Mass was held Oct. 18 in the Mont La Salle Chapel, Napa, for De La Salle Christian Brother Thomas Levi, 88, who died Oct. 14 in Napa.

Born in Porter, Montana, Brother Levi was a member of his religious community for 71 years. He served in a variety of teaching and administrative positions in northern and southern California. Locally, from 1938-41, he was a teacher and vice-principal at Cathedral High School in Los Angeles.

From 1950-56, he served as president of Saint Mary's College in Moraga. Under his tenure as college president, he was noted for the program he helped institute to assist women religious to finish their teaching degrees and improve Catholic education at both the elementary and secondary level. Later, he served as assistant superintendent of Catholic schools for the Diocese of Monterey-Fresno from 1965-1966.

Burial took place in the Brothers Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lasallian Education Fund, De La Salle Institute, 4401 Redwood Road, Napa, California 94558.

Fr. Leo Bede Johnson, CJ
Funeral Mass was held Oct. 14 at St. Louis de Montfort Church for Josephite Father Leo Bede Johnson, 91, who died Oct. 11 in Santa Maria.

At the time of his death, he was the oldest member of the international Congregation of the Josephites. Santa Barbara Region Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Curry presided at Father Johnson's funeral.

Born in Hebburn-on-Tyne, England, Father Johnson entered the Josephite congregation in 1930 and was ordained at priest at Ushaw College, England, in 1939. He held many teaching positions in England and, during that time, led several pilgrimages to Lourdes, France where he was named an honorary Canon of Lourdes.

In 1966, he was transferred to the American Region in Santa Maria, Calif. He was a teacher at St. Joseph High School in Santa Maria and Pius X High School in Downey in the mid-'60s. In 1967, he served as associate pastor at St. Louis de Montfort Church in Santa Maria where he worked until his retirement in 2000.
