Holy connections: Saints and parishes

Each month, The Tidings lists dates in the church's calendar which commemorate saints and other noteworthy celebrations during the upcoming month, and archdiocesan parishes named in their honor. The list may not include all the feast days in a particular month.

Oct. 1: St. Therese of the Child Jesus, the ninth and youngest child of Louis Martin born in 1873, entered the Carmelites at age 15. She sought holiness through her "little way" for self-surrender to God. She died in 1897, canonized in 1925 and named Doctor of the Church in 1997. Parish: St. Therese, Alhambra.

Oct. 2: Guardian Angels, intermediaries between God and humanity, a memorial in their honor introduced to the church calendar in 1670. Parish: Guardian Angel, Pacoima.

Oct. 3: St. Clare of Assisi, foundress of the Poor Clares under the direction of St. Francis in 13th century. Parishes: St. Clare, Santa Clarita; Santa Clara, Oxnard.

Oct. 4: St. Francis of Assisi, son of a wealthy merchant, he decided to serve God and the poor, founded the order of Franciscans in 13th century. Parishes: St. Francis of Assisi, Fillmore; St. Francis of Assisi, Los Angeles.

Oct. 6: St. Bruno, born in Germany 11th century, gave up his riches to live as a hermit, founded the Carthusian order. Parish: St. Bruno, Whittier.

Oct. 7: Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, Pope Pius V solemnized this Marian feast in 1571 for the victory of the Christian navy over the Turks at Lepanto. Parishes: Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, Sun Valley; Our Lady of the Rosary, Paramount; Our Lady of the Rosary of Talpa, Los Angeles.

Oct. 9: St. Denis, first bishop of Paris, third century, martyred and patron saint of France. Parish: St. Denis, Diamond Bar.

Oct. 15: St. Teresa of Avila, reformed Carmelite orders of nuns and friars in 16th century, first woman named a Doctor of the Church in 1970; her advice: "let nothing trouble you, God alone is enough." Parish: St. Teresa of Avila, Los Angeles.

Oct. 16: St. Gerard Majella, Redemptorist lay brother 18th century, canonized in 1904; model of humility and charity to the poor. Parish: St. Gerard Majella, Los Angeles.

Oct. 18: St. Luke, one of four evangelists whose Gospel emphasizes the universality of Christ's message. Parish: St. Luke, Temple City.

Oct. 20: St. Paul of the Cross, Italian priest, founded the order of Passionists in 18th century dedicated to the Passion of Christ. Parish: St. Paul of the Cross, La Mirada.

Oct. 28: St. Jude, early first century martyr, became patron saint of hopeless cases. Parish: St. Jude, Westlake Village.
