for 2005

By Mike Nelson
text only version

Five members of the Los Angeles Catholic community who have long and distinguished records of service were announced last week as recipients of the 2005 Cardinal's Award.

Cardinal Roger Mahony presented the honorees Sept. 9 at the annual awards luncheon, held at the Cathedral Conference Center in downtown Los Angeles. They are (in alphabetical order):

---Dr. David P. Frelinger, past president of the Catholic Medical Association and Mission Doctors Association, volunteer on American Indian reservations, former team sports physician for local high schools, and a parishioner at St. Anastasia Church, Westchester.

---June Gleason, for more than 30 years a member, secretary and volunteer with the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, active in many parish and school activities, and a parishioner of St. Catherine Laboure Church, Torrance.

---Stanley Hayden, member and director of numerous boards, institutions and agencies, past president of Catholic Charities, the son of 1990 recipient William R. Hayden, and a parishioner of St. Philip the Apostle Church, Pasadena.

---Joan Payden, founder-president of Payden & Riegel investment management firm, board member and trustee of numerous organizations, active in community activities and a parishioner of St. Monica Church, Santa Monica.

---Msgr. John Sheridan, pastor emeritus of Our Lady of Malibu Church in Malibu, former director of the Catholic Information Center, longtime former columnist of The Tidings, and a priest of the archdiocese since 1943.

The beneficiary for this year's Cardinal's Award Dinner (Feb. 5, 2004 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel) will be Guardian Angel Church in Pacoima, which plans to build a new and larger church.

Since 1990, funds raised from the Cardinal's Award Dinner have supported programs, agencies and relief efforts in all pastoral regions of the archdiocese. The newly-announced honorees bring to 79 the number of men and women honored with the award. For information on the 2004 Cardinal's Award Dinner, call (213) 637-7636.
