Labor Day Mass Sept. 6

text only version

Several thousand workers will gather for the annual archdiocesan Labor Day Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. Cardinal Roger Mahony, presider, will be joined by concelebrating priests and auxiliary bishops.

Hotel workers will be spotlighted this year as they continue their protracted contract dispute with hotel owners. Hotel workers and their supporters will process from Pershing Square in downtown Los Angeles beginning at 8:45 a.m. to the Cathedral. The efforts of Los Angeles security guards to unionize will also be addressed.

Labor Day offers an opportunity to "join and support [workers'] struggle for better working conditions, wages and to be able to secure a better future for their families," said Maria Elena Perales, director of the archdiocesan Office of Justice and Peace.

In light of the presidential election year, Cardinal Mahony also will bless parish leaders involved in "The California Faithful Citizenship Campaign" to promote voter registration and increase civic participation on behalf of the common good and human dignity. Voter registration tables also will be set up outside the Cathedral following the liturgy.

The Cathedral is located at 555 W. Temple Street.
