ICON RETURNS --- Patriarch Alexy II, head of the
Russian Orthodox Church, and Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of
the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, venerate the
icon of the Mother of God of Kazan during a ceremony Aug. 28 in
Assumption Cathedral in the Kremlin in Moscow. The icon, which was
spirited out of Russia following the Bolshevik Revolution, was returned
at the request of Pope John Paul II as a gesture of good will intended
to help bridge the 1,000-year divide between the Roman Catholic
and Russian Orthodox churches.
