Santa Maria student earns Scholarship honor

Mansoor A. Arain, a 2004 graduate of St. Joseph High School, Santa Maria, was named a recipient of one of 2,000 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship Awards, announced by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. of Evanston, Ill. A resident of Orcutt, Arain received the award from UCLA, where he plans to pursue a career in medicine.

Other college-sponsored Merit Scholarship recipients from the archdiocese included Christopher Hasbrouck of Loyola High School, from USC (law); Anan Jiang of Loyola, from UCLA (medicine/radiology); and Jinah Kim of Immaculate Heart High School, Hollywood, from Tufts (journalism).

Corporate-sponsored award recipients included Eleanor Warner of Immaculate Heart, from Boeing (physics/philosophy).
