William L. Clark, father of bishop, dies

William L. Clark

Funeral Mass was held July 29 at Saint Pius V Church in Buena Park for William L. (Bill) Clark, 85, who died July 24. Clark was the father of Our Lady of the Angels Region Auxiliary Bishop Edward W. Clark.

A longtime parishioner at Saint Pius V Church, Clark served as the first Parish Council president and was chairman of the annual diocesan appeal at the church for many years. A parish Eucharistic Minister, Clark had also been a member of the Knights of Columbus as well as a past president of the Legion of Mary.

Clark, a former Los Angeles contact representative for the Railroad Retirement Board, had served during WWII as a technical sergeant for the 133rd Mobile Evacuation Hospital. During the war, his military unit helped to liberate a Nazi labor camp in Germany.

Survivors include his wife, Julia Goschey Clark, oldest son, Bishop Clark, son, Kevin, and daughters, Maureen Salmon and Diana Chesmore as well as six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Burial took place at National Cemetery in Riverside, California.

Jainee Abrera

Funeral Mass was held July 24 at St. Francis Xavier Church in Burbank for Jainee Abrera, 23, a religion teacher at Providence High School, who died suddenly of cardiac arrest July 16. A Providence High School graduate, Abrera had just completed her second year of teaching in the school's Religious Studies Department.

Noted for her altruism, Abrera volunteered for a number of charitable organizations, including the Los Angeles Catholic Worker House, Habitat for Humanity and the L.A. AIDS Walk. Her extra-curricular school activities included chaperoning choir competitions as well as annual Kairos religious retreats and assisting with the cheerleading squad. A graduate of U.C. Davis, she held a Bachelor of Science degree in human development.

Providence students and faculty members were among those attending Abrera's funeral Mass. Survivors include her parents, Jaime and Audrey Abrera, her brother, Army Specialist 4th Class Joseph Abrera, her sister, Janine Abrera, and her sister-in-law, Desiree Abrera.

Sr. Mary Antonia Shaules

Sr. Mary Antonia Shaules, CSJ
Funeral Mass was held May 11 at Carondelet Center in Los Angeles for St. Joseph of Carondelet Sister Mary Antonia Shaules, who died May 3.

Born in San Diego, she joined the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1927 and embarked on a teaching career. After over four decades teaching students in grades 5, 6 and 7, Sister Shaules semi-retired to San Diego where she served as sacristan at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace as well as librarian at Our Lady of Angels School across town.

In 1990, she moved to Van Nuys and became director of a parish food pantry for 11 years. On the last day of her active life, before being bedridden, she made bows for 37 bouquets for Jubilee Day.
