Cantor formation begins Aug. 2

Santa Barbara Region News
text only version

Openings are still available for a cantor formation class scheduled to begin Aug. 2 at St. Mary Magdalen Church, Camarillo.

Coordinated through the archdiocesan Office for Worship, the eight-week class (7-9:30 p.m. Mondays, except for Labor Day, through Sept. 27) is the "A" portion of the two-part certification process. Participants are expected to have basic abilities in music-reading, matching pitch, maintaining a melody; a basic knowledge of liturgy; and a basic spirit of hospitality and service.

Required texts --- including the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, "Music in Catholic Worship," "Liturgical Music Today" and the General Instruction of the Roman Missal --- will be available for purchase the first night of class, led by Janis Nelson, M.A., cantor and liturgy director at St. Mary Magdalen and a member of the Office for Worship music committee.

Registration is $85. Forms are available on the Office for Worship website, www.laliturgy.org. For information, call (213) 637-7262.
