San Gabriel Region
text only version

Maryknoll Father Delos Andrew Humphrey, who previously worked in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, celebrated his 50th anniversary of ordination as a Maryknoll missioner June 27 in Ossining, N.Y.

A native of Rome, N.Y., and ordained to the priesthood on June 12, 1954, Father Humphrey was initially assigned to the Maryknoll Mission in Taichung, Taiwan, serving in numerous capacities there before coming to Los Angeles in 1970, where he took courses in Clinical Pastoral Education. He returned to Taiwan where he began studying the Mandarin language in preparation for his next assignment in Taipei.

From 1972 to 1987 he served in Taiwan in various capacities with the Chinese Bishops' Conference, as English secretary for the Secretariat and for Cardinal Paul Yu Pin, and as a founding member of the Catholic Worldwide Marriage Encounter in Taipei. In 1987 he returned to the United States to do mission promotion and education work in St. Louis, then became director of the Maryknoll Center in Buffalo (1988-92).

After a sabbatical leave to study at Chaminade University in Honolulu, Father Humphrey worked as administrator of St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Monterey Park, helping to establish an outreach mission to the Chinese Catholic community (1993-95). He returned to Taiwan in 1995 and retired there in 1997. He remains involved in ministry to overseas contract workers as well as various other helping ministries. Since 1996, he has participated in the Maryknoll Asian Migrant Ministry.
