Sisters, priests celebrate milestone jubilees

Throughout the summer, The Tidings will present information on priests and religious who are celebrating significant anniversaries of their ordination or profession of vows in 2004.

Sisters of Charity BVM

Eight Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary with ties to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles --- three currently ministering in the archdiocese --- are celebrating their golden jubilees in religious life in 2004. They will gather July 10 at the Mount Carmel Motherhouse in Dubuque, Iowa, for a liturgy of thanksgiving.

Sr. Viviana Harman

The jubilarians are:

---Sister Mary Joan (John Raymond) Fitzgerald, who taught at Bishop Garcia Diego High School, Santa Barbara (1959-62). She currently is principal at Xavier College Prep High School in Phoenix.

---Sister Viviana Harman, a native of Beverly Hills who entered the BVM congregation from Good Shepherd Church. She taught at Incarnation, Glendale (1957) and St. Brendan, Los Angeles (1979-2002). She currently lives in Los Angeles and volunteers for hospice at St Brendan.

Sr. Alice Kerker

---Sister Alice (St. Justin) Kerker, who served as parish visitor at Holy Family Church, Glendale (1988-97), and is now retired in Glendale.

---Sister Louise Marie (Laurina) Levandowski, who taught at St. John Baptist de La Salle School, Granada Hills (1983-84). She is currently retired in Davenport, Iowa.

Sr. Janice Link

---Sister Janice Link, assistant administrator at Bishop Alemany High School, Mission Hills, who has ministered in the Los Angeles Archdiocese for 30 years, the last 15 at Alemany. She taught at St. Francis Xavier School, Burbank (1974-79); Immaculate Heart, Hollywood (1979-84); and taught ESL at the Peace and Justice Center, Los Angeles (1986-90).

---Sister Mary (Loras) Martens, who taught at Our Lady of Loretto High School, Los Angeles (1975-77). She is currently on the faculty at Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa.

Sr. Bernita Lindstrom

---Sister Patricia Ann (Vincent DePaul) Perko, who taught at St. Charles, North Hollywood (1973-79). She now lives in Butte, Mont.

---Sister Mary (Mary de Porres) Sattgast, who taught at Holy Family, Glendale (1959-63). She currently is registrar at Carmel High School, Mundelein, Ill.

Franciscan Sisters

Franciscan Sister Bernita Lindstrom, presently teaching at St. Luke School, Temple City, will celebrate her golden jubilee as a Franciscan Sister of Little Falls, Minn., on June 27 at Little Falls.

Sister Lindstrom has spent 50 years teaching in Catholic elementary schools, the last three at St. Luke. She also has taught in Minnesota, New Mexico and California, including St. Anthony School, San Gabriel, and St. Elizabeth School, Altadena.

Carmelite Friars

Carmelite Father Thomas Butler will observe his 60th anniversary as a professed friar with the Carmelite Order on Aug. 15. A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Father Butler entered the Carmelites in Pennsylvania in 1944, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1950. Since then, he has served at parishes and schools throughout the U.S., including Crespi High School Encino, and St. Jane Frances de Chantal Church, North Hollywood.
