Even though the Santa Teresita School softball team didn't take top honors at the CYO competitions this year, the team considers this season one of their best on record. Undefeated in their league, the girls advanced to the quarterfinal playoffs this May --- the furthest an East Los Angeles softball team had made it since 1989.
"They really did well this year and the coach, Rosanne Rodriguez, connected with the girls," says Dominican Sister Angelica Velez, principal. "It was a great moment of pride and joy."
Indeed, the whole season for the team was a scene of community, dedication and support. Eugenia Sabado, an alumna of the school, attended every game to watch her niece Genevieve Vasquez play. "There was a lot of camaraderie in the stands from the parents, family and friends," she says. "We really enjoyed watching them play and seeing them give their all."
Sabado says that sports for girls can be such a boost to their self-esteem, especially middle school students. "You can see such a change in their manner and attitude," she says. "Playing sports has brought out the best in them. They really have matured because of this experience."
In addition to the softball team's impressive record, the girls volleyball and basketball team also went undefeated in their leagues this year. |
