Two members of The Tidings' Editorial Council, both professors of theology at Loyola Marymount University in Westchester, received book awards at the recent Catholic Press Association Convention in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Michelle A. Gonzalez received a third place award in the "Gender Issues" classification for her work, "Sor Juana: Beauty and Justice in the Americas" (Orbis Books, Maryknoll, N.Y.). The book profiles Sor Juana Ines de La Cruz, an early woman theologian who wrote on women's human rights and their contributions to spirituality.
"Sor Juana wrote prolifically and spoke on behalf of peoples doubly oppressed and voiceless," commented the panel of judges. "To bring her voice back at a time when there is so much oppression of women in the name of religion is a great gift. The book is well written and fascinating."
Jesuit Father Thomas Rausch, T. Marie Chilton professor of theology, received an honorable mention award in the "Popular Presentation of the Catholic Faith" category for "Catholicism in the Third Millennium" (Liturgical Press, Collegeville, Minn.). |
